Our Story

In 2020, at the beginning of the worldwide pandemic, and our nation’s season of social withdrawal, Retreat Home was established.

Executive Director, Sarah ButlerWills, shares that “Retreat Home was birthed from the womb of deep faith and social justice.” She asked, “How can the community be supported to step into the housing crisis with relevance? Through radical hospitality.” Her decades of experience as a social worker, therapist and pastor have given her the skills, capacity and passion necessary to design the core vision of Retreat Home. Sarah shares that “my curiosity and calling always returns to the church. How can we step into places of serving our community that matter? Could the church step into an opportunity to provide hospitality in such a way that provides stability for unhoused families?”

Retreat Home was the response to these questions.

The first guests arrived at Sarah and her husband Brad’s home in 2020. You can read about this family here.

Since then, as the Retreat Home community has grown, many more families have been housed in hospitality and then moved on to stable housing.

If you would like to join us in a community of response, we welcome and need you. We need volunteers and financial supporters. Together, this community that responds to the housing crisis with open homes and open hearts, will provide stability and safety to many vulnerable families in our community.
